Welcome to AWellsArtworks
The Artist:
Andrew Wells is a self-taught artist currently residing in the Upstate of South Carolina with his wife Diane and their two Yorkshire Terriers, Gina and Roma.
He is a graduate of Clemson University’s College of Architecture and has more than thirty years of professional architectural and design experience. Since his early retirement from architecture, Andrew has dedicated a significant portion of his time to creating artworks.
His exploration of painting began with a deep inherent appreciation for artistic principles in observing the works of the Early Masters. His
study continues to reveal unique relationships between the canvas, the artist, and the medium, whether acrylic, oil, or multi-media. His favored medium is walnut based oil, used for centuries by many of the Masters.
He has shared his passion for painting people and his commissioned artworks have been called, “unique compelling portraits.”
Andrew is also a professional framer of artworks and participates regularly in consulting and advising other artists and collectors in the framing and conservation of their art
Artist Statement:
Each time I pick up the brush to create a painting I learn something new, and that’s refreshing. The creative process itself is what truly fascinates me. When exploring and composing an artwork I strive to capture something unique and compelling. With each stroke of the brush a multitude of illusions are revealed through the application of color and texture, amidst the interplay of light, shade, shadow, reflection and transparency. I think of painting as being three dimensional, similar to a sculpture, where the viewer can explore the depth of the artwork.
I consider myself a “dark” painter, using deeper, richer colors. My favorite medium is oil on stretched canvas or a cradled panel. I especially love creating artwork that encompasses people doing the things they most enjoy. When I am able to capture an emotion or mystique that holds and moves the viewer, or create an interaction where the viewer can experience the moment, I feel a great sense of accomplishment. Painting is relaxing, peaceful, and above all, it is my passion.
